Rear Admiral House

Location: Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
Year: 2012
Area: 109 m2
Level: 1L

The narrow and restrictive lot size of Rear Admiral House bore constraints typical of inner-suburban living, where the need for privacy, outdoor spaces, solar penetration and thermal comfort drove the inception of a subtractive design development process –whereby the architect removed all extraneous elements having no direct positive outcome on the necessary requirements of the Brief.

The result was a pared-back and minimalist design well-suited to the limited space, and well-orientated to maximise thermal efficiencies in the difficult climate of Melbourne, Australia.
